These are the behind the scenes and outtake photos of Project L’s 57th part, The vocalist in Marsaskala.

Nothing can help it.

I’m way too addicted to Canon’s 35mm f/1.4L II.

It’s just that I really, really like it, up to those levels that I’m trying to find excuses to use it whenever an another lens would be a more logical choice. It’s just that my 35mm produces always excellent images, with excellent colours, sharpness and – of course – the beautiful, smooth and creamy bokeh.

I mean, who in their right mind would use a 35mm lens full open to photograph a sea promenade of a Maltese town? I did. And I really love the bokeh of the image; it’s interesting enough, but yet secludes the model and makes it look like she’s from another world; because perhaps – just perhaps – she is.

The 35mm fits very well in both indoors and outdoors, and only in extremely rare situations have I noticed that I’d need a wider lens to capture everything. Even in those situations, I’ll try to make it work before giving it up for the 24-70mm f/2.8L II or 11-24mm f/4L. They’re excellent lenses too, but what can I do, I’m addicted.

About the process of photography

As said, using the 35mm is a joy. With its wide aperture it’s possible to use the lens in dimly-lit places without cranking up the ISO to higher levels and thus leaving the image as smooth and true to the location as possible.

As I’ve written many times before, I try not to use any external lights, but instead, I always attempt to use the ambient lighting to my favour.

Is there a window that shines a thin light over a certain area of the shoot location? Then why not put the model’s face right there and then work around that. Is there a mirror that reflects the house’s own lights? Use that! Is there a dimly lit area where there is very little light, but the light what there is, is extremely soft? Well, let’s put the model there and use the extremely wide aperture to avoid noise from ISO.

I’ve owned this lens for a while now – almost exactly for one year, to be exact – and I’m still wondering how much can one person really appreciate one lens so damn much. Its novelty has not drawn away even though I’ve shot tens of thousands of photos with it. The lens is ridiculously good for my shooting style.
