These are the behind the scenes and outtake photos Project L: Part 37 – Overly gothic.

I know the publication is late, but in between the 37th Project L and this one, there was this little hassle of moving all of your belongings to a different city. But as all of that hassle’s almost over, here are the behind the scenes of Project L!

About the process
of photography

When I started shooting Project L, I mostly used one lens – Canon’s 50mm f/1.2L. It’s a wonderful lens, albeit not the sharpest one, but its bokeh (the blurry area out of focus) is simply amazing; just like the possibilities it gave me.

I still love the lens and adore what it does, but to be honest, it feels like cheating; people only see the bokeh and think that only it defines the image’s quality, as a proper bokeh is rather rare in nowadays oversaturation of cellphone pics – and those don’t have any out-of-focus areas due to the small sensor size. But yeah, I’m a bokeh-addict.

To keep your work refreshing, you’ll constantly have to challenge yourself and try new things, new ideas, new focal lengths. In example, who would be stupid enough to use a lens’s 11 millimetres for shooting portraits? I would. Because trying ridiculous stuff – and succeeding in it – is extremely delightful.

I usually keep extra AA-batteries with me on my backpack, as when in need, they always run out. And guess what happened this time? The batteries ran out of juice. And did I find any batteries from my backpack? Noooope. This was really bothersome, as the sharp midday sun created really strong contrasts. We had to result in waiting for clouds to cover the sun and shoot in shadows. I was extremely sceptical about how well it would work in the end results, but I’m delighted that I managed to get just the right exposures.

But I’ll have to admit, having a working off-camera strobe would’ve done wonders.
